Open Letter to the Gypsy

Aloha Gypsy,
You were right about YellowBeard. It's sad because he does have some very likable qualities. Although from a broad perspective, his mentality isn't much different from the norm. I think that because most living organisms are so deeply conditioned to fight for survival, a perceived challenge to their basic belief system is the emotional equivalent of a physical attack. Add to this YellowBeard's passionate enjoyment of the fight, his vested interest in it, and the bitterness, pain and anger that fuels it, and you have your basic psychological profile for a full spectrum of fanaticism all the way from the terrorist to the internet anti-guru guru. What makes this particularly tragic in YellowBeard's case is that he has taken the tools for spiritual awakening that might actually have helped him and used them to serve the opposite purpose. You could compare him to an enormously wealthy man who squanders his fortune in a mad campaign to prove to the world the worthlessness of money. And he proves it. The money was of no use to him and poverty will be his lot. I have an image of such people who delight in digging up the dirt on wisdom teachers as pigs the size of dump trucks plowing their snouts madly through huge piles of garbage and screaming with delight whenever a particularly large and foul piece of meat gets thrown up into the air. They have lost their capacity to discern truth. Their truth is falsehood. Of all people, are they not most to be pitied?
