Clueless Treatment of Volunteers
A group went to Mexico this weekend from a temple to take Christmas presents to an orphanage. They have done this for several years and SRF has reimbursed the gas expenses for people who drive their trucks/vans carrying the gifts. They did this by just giving each driver $20 cash.

This year the wonderful compassionate Accounting Department, with their 10 million dollar computer system, decided to change the rules. They would of course still reimburse people, because of their appreciation and support of volunteers (sarcasm intended) but they would need to do the following:

1. Fill up with gas the morning of the trip and provide SRF with the receipt (to prove it).

2. Fill up with gas again once they get home and get this receipt to the coordinator (to show the exact amount of money the person deserves).

SRF is totally clueless how to appreciate people. Of course the answer is that they don’t appreciate people. They don’t want to change the reimbursement policy so they don’t look bad, but they so fundamentally misunderstand how to actually be caring and supportive, that they don’t even know how this looks. They can’t even fake it effectively.

All those volunteering that day knew exactly how it looked and none of them took SRF up on the offer. SRF will not see that for what it is, but hopefully they will read this explanation on the Walrus. You Walrus readers will not doubt see this as consistent behavior with other things you have seen.

Re: Clueless treatment of volunteers
I'm going to play devil's advocate here. This shift in policy may well represent what you call "clueless treatment," but I'm wondering whether it just might represent a shift in tax law. I don't live in California, but in my state you now have to submit receipts for all gas purchases, as well as mileage figures, if you are using a vehicle part-time for business. Before, you didn't need to go to all this trouble.

If this is indeed the case, it sounds like the administration didn't make it clear to the volunteers as to why there was a shift in policy, which is a poor move, because clearly the volunteers resented the policy shift. But perhaps it may well be, as you say, nothing more than not trusting the members. This would be sad.

Tax Deduction
So they are going to try to claim this as a business expense? What about just giving them the money and not try to claim it on taxes?

We do want to see all sides, however in this case I think the bigger picture shows at least a lack of understand what "giving" means. Even at Christmas they don't understand.

Re: Tax Deduction
What taxes are you talking about? SRF is a non profit....I understand non profits do not pay taxes. I side with the clueles theory of course.
