Abbot George Burke
If anyone is interested in reading Burke's aubiography, the title is "Eagle's Flight: the Autobiography of an Orthodox Christian." It describes his unique journey, including his take on Christianity, Hinduism, and his experiences with SRF and Yogananda.

SRF is disgusting. This is not the action of holy people.

George Burke is Visited by Yogananda
"My initiation into Kriya Yoga took place in the fall of 1961... The day after my Kriya Initiation I went to Forest Lawn. When I touched my head to the Master's tomb, a great current of power, such as that which I had experienced at the Initiation the night before, flowed into me.

...One of us was carrying around a photo of Yogananda... Then my attention was drawn to the window just above the photo. There in letters of flaming glass I saw, "A little while, and ye shall see me." I was thunderstruck, for I knew this could be no coincidence. It was not. That night the Master came to me in a vision far more "real" than any earthly experience could possibly be. From then on my Beloved Friend became a regular visitant, sometimes blessing, sometimes teaching, and even sometimes warning me.... The intimate presence of Yogananda became the joy of my life." -p125, Saint Georges Press

I got a copy from the Bodhi Tree Bookstore. I requested it and had to wait for some period, but eventually they called back when it was in stock. www.bodhitree.com/contact.html

Re: Abbot George Burke
I know there are other Burke related threads on the Walrus, but this seemed a good place to put a few more very pertinent quotes, from his book, An Eagle's Flight; Autobiography of a Gnostic Orthodox Christian, Saint George Press, Geneve, NE, 1994. It's out of print, but when I ordered it from an Amazon used bookseller in Sept, there were other copies available.

Burke is a man of very strong opinions. Since he's an old-time-religion kind of guy, some of his opinions may put people off (eg, deplores Vatican II, and thinks Babaji erred in granting Lahiri's request for Kriya for the masses, since the techniques had to be diluted). He is also free in making bold assertions about Christian and other doctrine, based just on his own inner experience.

But this same boldness, and trust in his own experience, allowed him to be, a real Walrus pioneer. Between 1960 and 1962 when he lived in the Hollywood Temple vicinity, and was immersed in SRF, he came to the conclusions we are reaching here, and trusted his perceptions enough that when he'd had enough, he just left. I think it's very relevant to quote some of the conclusions he came to 40+ years ago (note that he did not know PY in form, and his conviction on Yogananda's nature is a result of his trust in his own meditative contact):

Quote:
I was continually disgusted with stories about the Master told by some of the disciples - and by one disciple in particular - wherein Yogananda was always presented as a harsh, abrupt, contrary, and carping tyrant. "And Master really scolded me" was a continual refrain in these reminiscences. One Sunday morning after being treated to a couple of these character assassinations by the lecturer at the Hollywood SRF Church, I went charging into the SRF Cafe and cornered one of the nuns, Sister Vijaya, who had known the Master well. "Did you hear today's talk, and the stories about Master?" I demanded. "Yes." She spoke very quietly as she nodded. "Will you let me tell you how I know the Master to really be?" I pressed further. She immediately sat down, and I took a seat opposite and outlined just how I knew Yogananda to be - in his personality and in his ways of dealing with people. "Now," I concluded, "that is the Yogananda I know - not the mean and nasty grouch presented to us this morning. Which of us is right: X or me?" I cannot forget how sweetly she smiled as she reached over to take my hands. Then she spoke calmly but forcefully. "You are absolutely right. What you say is exactly what Master was - and is - like. But don't worry. Those who are in tune will know." She was right. p. 168

Re: Abbot George Burke
Another quote from Burke's "An Eagle's Flight," full citation in the previous message:
Quote:
When speaking of his public work he [Yoganada] also said that within three generations it would be as though he had never come-such would be the degeneration on an institutional level. If his hearers expressed chagrin as [sic] this statement he would assure them that his work would go on-but not under his name. "I have planted the seed," he would say in conclusion. p. 466

Burke doesn't say who the audience was, or how he heard this statement, but on the other hand, we don't know the audience who supposedly heard him say "millions will come." Given the present state of the organization, this version of PY's vision of the future of his work seems to carry a lot of weight.

Re: Abbot George Burke
One more quote of interest especially to those with Christian roots:
Quote:
As I sat in the Hollywood church that Easter morning I was struck for the first time with the "Catholicism" of Yogananda as expressed in every church he personally founded. He had always placed two items in the front as the center of attention: a crucifix (not a simple barren cross) and an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.* Obviously he intended the focus to be on Jesus Christ, not the abstract formless Christ of Whom Jesus of Nazareth was a manifestation. Otherwise he would have used a light, a flame, or some more impersonal symbol. But he did not.

*Although they were to be found in the churches in 1962, they may not be there now. [Burke's footnote]

This Burke sounds intersting. Is he the one that wrote that little booklet about "An Experience in Cosmic Consciousness"?

Re: Abbot George Burke
Ranger, great quote from Burke. Thanks for putting it up here. I saw it in another section of the Walrus and wanted to comment on it then. That's the sign of a true Yogi, that seed, rather than the institution and his own 'outer work' and recognition, is what is important and I'm sure he remained totally detached from it all. 8)

Abbot George Burke on Yogananda's and his own mission
"Daily communion and daily meditation became the twin poles of my life. There was no incongruity whatsover in drawing the essence from the two traditions of Christianity and Yoga. Only to those involved in institutionalism would my synthesis have seemed impossible or objectionable. And that is understandable, for both sides have drifted far from their original vision. -Eagle's Flight

Because of these references, I have obtained a copy of "Eagles' Flight", and have read the first couple of chapters.

Is it just me, or does anyone else find his style of writing "spooky"?

bsjones, I know what you mean by spooky. But listen, I found the first couple chapters not only 'spooky' but also very boring, but later on the book gets a lot more interesting and I've learned a lot. I would also like to add that George Burke is a very good writer and he has helped me understand Yogananda's position better, explain Christianity and Catholicism further, and he has influenced me to not eat meat more than anyone. Overall, it's well worth reading.

Re: Abbot George Burke on Yogananda's and his own mission
Red, thanks. That is good to know. I will hang in there. Actually, I like reading the book, aside from the spooky picture of Abbot George in his robe and hood, and the boring factor (maybe he should of hired a Hollywood ghost writer to help him jazz it up a little). But I guess I'm open to the possibliity that he might know some things I don't, and I look forward to the rest of the book. Have you ever met the guy?

Thanks to all for mentioning this book and George Burke. I've recently been feeling a strong draw to the mystic Christian tradition, and have been praying to Master for guidence in this matter. I will get my hands on a copy of this book... Also, does anyone have contact information for George Burke? I'd really like to email/communicate with him

Also, any links to websites regarding his teachings or his students? Does he have students?

I think his monastery is in Borrego Springs, so you can start by googling on his name and that location. When I got his book last September, it was one of 7 available at the time from the Amazon used booksellers. I too skipped the initial boring bits, and started in earnest reading from the chapter when he finds the AY and subsequently moves near Hollywood Temple in 1960. Very inspirational from the mystical Christainity perspective. I wish there had been more attributions for some of the statements he makes, eg, what he says about Laurie Pratt's editing, but I assume that some of these were made in confidence.

Light of Christ Monastery
Well, I did a web search, and found that George Burke's monastery is called "Light of Christ". The problem is that I couldn't find a single link to an address, a phone number, or a website.

One interesting thing I did find out is that the monastery makes these really interesting icons of Christian Saints, as well as of the SRF Gurus. (I've seen their St. Francis/St. Claire and the SRF Masters icons for sale at Ananda Village). The icons they make are like updated, modern versions of the ones that you see in Eastern Orthodox churches in Turkey or Russia or Greece. They're really great, and have a very high spiritual vibration.

My desire to contact this man is growing every day!
