YOGA –ITS MYSTERY & PERFORMING ART
Taken from

KRIYA YOGA DISCUSSION BOARD

I would like to bring to your notice one book written by Swami Sadhanananda Giri who happens to be an Acharya in the path of Kriyayoga.
The book is called –
YOGA –ITS MYSTERY & PERFORMING ART
By-YOGACHARYA SWAMI SADHANANDA GIRI.
(Translated by Dr Kalyan Bhattacharya)
Price Rs. 150.00
(The original book in Bengali is -Yoga O Sadhan Rahasya)

The book was first written in Bengali in 1985.Till now 4 editions have been published & has really changed the life of many- like me- by inspiring & infusing in them the truth- that Yoga is not something strange or enigmatic, nor a figment of fancy. The book depicts yoga as an easy & simple method of performing art, for all people, which is firmly grounded in reality.
The most important thing for the common man is that the intensely secret, absolute & ultimate topic of Yoga has probably never before appeared in print in such a simple & straightforward exposition.

The book attempts to show the way to make this mortal sojourn meaningful & how to saturate this worldly life within the radiations of eternity.
The book attempts to suffice all persons in the path of yoga. So for a common man it starts depicting what is Yoga & its necessity for all of us. Swamiji says it not in the obscure nooks in the Himalaya or into the inaccessible sylvan retreats of the Narmada that we have to move to achieve the Union with the Supreme Soul.

So starting from “What is Yoga” the text moves to the general classification of Yoga, components of the Yoga, Pranayama & the entity of the Kulakundalini or the Serpent power. Up to this we can have from any book on Yoga.
But here forth starts the unique style of Swami Sadhanananda.

Swamiji next narrates the exact way of practicing the different mudras i.e. the Khechari Mudra, Mahamudra, Sambhabi Mudra, Mulavanda Mudra, Bhramari, and Yonimudra etc.
He touches every minute detail of these Mudras stating clearly the experience of a new practitioner of the Mudra & also the ultimate feelings of an advanced Sadhaka. He also explains the results of these practices. Swamiji clearly states that all practice of Yoga must be carried out under the guidance of a Guru.
Next he moves to clearly state the sequential acts of different Asana & Mudra in practicing Kriyayoga. As you know that Kriyayoga is divided into 4 parts i.e. The First Kriya. The Second Kriya etc

The experience of the Balak Sadhaka (a new practitioner) & the hurdles that his mind poses for him are not spared. But Swamiji states that this flickering are all but natural & it proves that you are in the right track. The Samaskara That you are born with drives you to it. But keep faith in yourself & implore your Guruji so that those are destroyed.
The book ends with a chapter that demonstrates the commonness of all religions. That the belief of all Sarvadharmasannaya is not a myth but a fact based on reality is shown here. Almost all the religious scriptures in one way or the other enjoin the practice Yoga. The Buddhist Ana pan Smriti, the Islamic Zikar, the Pranayama of our traditional scriptures may sound different but the central theme is identical. The Islamic Noor & the Jyoti of our scriptures are one & the same. The framework of the book stresses this thematic synthesis.
This masterpiece with its clear, grand presentation of doctrines as such & perceptive exposition of the highest realm of thought & meditation makes it a must for all the followers of Truth.

At last I would like to comment only that on 5th July, 2001, on the day of Gurupurnima he stated that all our performance of Yoga is aimed at making ourselves pure & capable, so that The Guru can bestow his blessings upon us.

I believe it is also available from www.mlbd.com
Motilal Banarsidass publishers , if interested one could email them and find out.

Re: YOGA –ITS MYSTERY & PERFORMING ART
Wow- sounds like a great book. I went to the website you suggested, and it didn't come up in the search engine. I checked the subject listing for yoga, and it still did not come up.

I sent them an email, and it came back as undeliverable! That seemed strange, so I sent it again and after a longer period it came back undeliverable.

Thanks for the info, it sounds like an inspiring book. I'm glad that a guru is still recommended- there is only so much you can get from a book.

I just checked to see if there was a phone number. It starts with 911! I've never called India before, and with a number starting like that, plus not knowing if they speak English on the other end, I'd hesitate to call. Any other leads on this book?

Re: YOGA –ITS MYSTERY & PERFORMING ART
Thanks username. I found it on the second website you listed, even though it didn't come up using the search engine. I was about to order it, when I decided I better find out what Rs 135 is in american dollars. Surely they aren't charging $135 dollars for this, are they?

Re: YOGA –ITS MYSTERY & PERFORMING ART
if you e-mail an order to this bookstore, they will email back to you the cost (including postage) then you either need to get an international money order/draft Or you fax them your credit card info. This book store usually has the best prices.

Nataraj books (in Virginia) has a "sister" store in India, so they can get any book for you, but they charge you "an american" price for it, so the prices here are usually higher, but no need to search for a bank that sells international money drafts

Jayguru Swami Sadhanananda Giri Maharaj.
Anyone willing to read the book may please email me at drsoumitra@yahoo.com.
We shall send the book from our Jujarasa Ashram.
The distributor of the book is making delay in sending the book.
This is a gem of Kriyayoga literature. It is like a text book for everyone who intends to learn about the real & authentic Kriya practice.
This particularly important at a day when due to publicity the deviated practice going on at various parts of the world seems to be the ideal Kriya.
fOR those practicing the Kriya say without Kechari etc it should be a regarded as a gift of GOD as hereby they can learn what the golden standard they are missing.

1st KRIYA & no 20736,it’s relation to higher Kriyas
"Revered :Lahiri Maharaj has classified Kriya Yoga into four
sections. These divisions represent four stages which a yoga
practitioner achieves in course of his gradual development. He
refers to these stages as the First Kriya, the second Kriya, the
third Kriya and the fourth Kriya

When a yoga practitioner goes on practicing pranayama and directs
upward the life force or prana to surge through the spinal canal
following the flow of cold air or Ida at that time the body gets
cold inside. Along with the upward carriage of the surging life
force, the mind which was so long bogged down in the lower strata
is forceful slowly in the upward direction. When the mind along with
the life force reaches it's crest at the sixth plexus
(ajnachakra—
twin petal led plexus between the eyebrows) and the cold air enters
inside completely at that time, the cold air very naturally tries to
go outwards . This time the mind is to be released with this
outward flow along with the lifeforce. Release of upward movement
of lifeforce or prana into the downward movement of apana in the
manner allied to the oblation of life force(prana) into the apana.
Again when the downward air reaches the first plexus, the ultimate
site of it's slow onward movement.
Thus takes place the oblation of prana into apana.

The aforesaid process of puraka , Khumabhaka and recaka constitute
the main foundation of Kriya.

The first Kriya is also known as the Kriya of practice of corporal
purification or the performance for meditation.
At this stage an effort should be there to prepare the tongue for
Kechari mudra. Talavya Kriya will be an aid to this goal. One cannot
deserve higher grades of Kriya until the tongue is prepared for
Kechari mudra.

By the particulated maneuverings of pranayama when the distracted
mind converges into the interior at that time the quality of rajas
deteriorate, giving way to increased faculty of sattva.
The sadhaka has to overcome four phases in order to reach the
summit after following the breathing exercise or pranayama. These
four stages are named pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and samadhi.
It may be perceived that if a sadhaka performs perfectly only
twelve breathing exercises as said above , his mind enters into the
interior world leaving the external attraction. This inward feeling
is called pratyahara.
The sadhaka after performing pranayama 144 in numbers arrives at
the state of spiritual concept (dharana).
The sadhaka arrives at the state of transcendental meditation after
performing 144x12= 1728 number of pranayams.
The state of trance is spontaneously achieved when an accomplisher
performs a number of 20736 pranayams.
The state of samadhi can be achieved as such but it is next to
impossible for anyone. To solve this problem revered Lahiri Mahasay
gives vent to an easy way. In this method the state coming out of
pranayama is given more attention that the number of pranayama. He
has classified the course of pranayama into four divisions. The
first (first Kriya) is related with the physical purifications, the
second is the Ohmkar Parnayam (breathing excersize of sacred om) ,
the third (Kriya) is "Thokarer Kriya' (pecking) i.e. device
of
repeatedly striking with repeated blows and the fourth is the
pranayama of meditations.
The four types of Kriya narrated above include all the states of
pranayama resulting out of the number of 20736."
