Swami Satyananda : a life sketch
Swami Satyananda

By Swami Prajñanananda Giri

Simplicity, serenity, and spirituality are reflected in the life of a great yogi, philosopher, singer, composer, poet, social worker and—above all—a certain true disciple and a divine master in the lineage of Kriya Yoga. He is none other than Swami Satyananda Giri. Satya means truth, and ananda means bliss. Satyananda’s life, although full of trials and tribulations, never deviated from truth. Truth was his breath. Truth was his activity. His life was a home of truth. Truth ever triumphs. Falsehood cannot endure forever. Although occasionally falsehood appears to be attractive and alluring, it is extremely temporary. Truth is eternal. Life without truth is not a divine life at all. From childhood, Swami Satyanandaji was a sincere seeker of truth.

His childhood name was Manmohan Mazumdar and he was the eldest son of Mohini Mohan Mazumdar and Taravasini Devi. He was born on November 17, 1896.

Swami Satyanandaji was simultaneously a writer, composer, singer, poet, servant of the downtrodden people, educator, moralist, spiritual master. He wrote the original biography of Shri Lahiri Mahasaya, Shriyukteshwarji, Hamsa Swami Kevalananda, also the memories of his association with Paramahamsa Yogananda (Yogananda Sanga) etc. He was a poet of an extraordinary caliber. He wrote many poems based on Kriya practice and yogic life. His voice was extremely beautiful and divine.

His life was full of events and activities. He was the head of two institutions till his last breath, Karar ashram, Puri and Sevayatan Satsang Mission, Jhargram. In Puri, his dear disciple Brahmachari Ravinarayan (our beloved Gurudev, Paramahamsa Hariharananda) and Jhargram his younger brother (who later became his disciple Swami Shuddhananda), took the responsibility of carrying out his mission. Later on, in a different will, he appointed them both to be his successors in these two different ashrams.

Although he had heart trouble since 1934, still he would manage to work hard and devotedly up to 1971. On 2nd August of the said year, he left his mortal frame in Sevayatan, Jhargram, Bengal. Thousands of disciples, devotees gathered to pay homage to this great soul.

Life is not measured in years and months, but by work performed with devotion. The life of a lamp burning in the night to dispel darkness is far better than a long-lasting fire covered with smoke and ashes. The life of Swami Satyananda is an ideal for all for his love, simplicity, activity, devotion and realization. In childhood he followed Mukundalal (Yoganandaji), in youth Swami Kevalananda, and in adulthood Swami Shriyukteshwarji. He dedicated his life to guiding thousands of people on the path of love and truth. He loved truth and lived in truth and realized truth in his life.

The annual day of observance of Swami Satyanandaji’s mahasamadhi is on August 2.

Re: Swami Satyananda disciples
Sanskrit Classics lists 4-5 disciples of Swami Satyananda giri :

Swami . Hariharananda / Ushananda Giri

I think he is different from hariharananda from kriya.org ( who is listed as disciple of PY ? ) Swami Ushananda seems to have 2 disciples -

==> Brahmachari Bhubaneshwarananda at satyayatan ashram , amber road, jaipur , rajasthan .

==> Swami Jnanananda Giri at Bajitpur , Birbhum , West bengal.

Sw. Jagadananda giri is another disciple of Swami Satyananda . I came across a reference to him on a web site about west bengal , at

I quote : Bramharshi Satyananda Sanyas Ashram. It is run by an order of Sanyasi who belong to the Dasanan Sect of Sankaracharya and use the title '‘giri' after their names. Bramhachari Jagadananda Giri founded it decades ago.

I think the address could be

Brahmarishi satyanada sanyas ashram
Belpahari , garrasini hills
Jhargam , Midnapore .
West bengal.

Swami Suddhananda giri , was initiated into kriya by Kebalananda and Swami Sri yukteswar , is also listed as disciple of Swami Satyananda. He passed on many years back.
He was one of the founders (not sure) of Sevayatan at Midnapore. They might be giving kriya there.

the other 2 disciples are Swami Niranjanananda Giri and Swami Dhirananda Giri

I cannot come up with any references to them anywhere
