BOOK: Yogananda Returns
I'm looking for some information on this book called Yogananda Returns by Robert R. Leichtman. This Leichtman guy claims to have "chanelled" Master. He says that Master wrote this book through him, or something like that. I haven't found much about it on the internet (can't find it on the internet... Must mean that it doesn't exist), but I found a copy of it on half.com... thinking about buying it just to see what it's about (it's only $1.50, so what the hey), although there's something too "new-agey" about the whole channelling thing that I don't trust. Master can come to ANY ONE OF US if we just listen for him. He doesn't NEED someone to channel him.

Anyone got any info on this book or on Mr. Leichtman?

I've heard of many others channeling Yogananda. Has anyone attended a session?

Friendly advice: Save your $1.50. Master promised he would NOT be channeled by psychics. I believe him. There used to be an old saying: GIGO (Garbage in, gagbage out). Why pollute your mind with some garbage book??? Select the best quality mental food.

$1.50 could better be spent on a cup of coffee.

RE: GIGO
Too late...

I bought the book last night.

Master promised he would NOT be channeled by psychics. I believe him.
==============================================

Where did he say this? I don't believe the concept of "channelled master" existed back in Master's day. This term was born in the early 70's in the emerging New Age movement. The first was that lady who channels that guy who says he's 25,000 years old and the "first enlightened being" or something outrageous like that. She/He even has a whole "enlightenment university" where she/he teaches classes and gives meditation techniques.

Don't think that I don't agree with you. I do. Channelling just isn't Master's style, and the reason I decided to buy the book is more out of novelty and curiosity than anything else. I wanted to see if the book would even sound like something Master would have written, and I'd like to see if the "channeller" considers himself a real devotee, has any outward experience with the teachings other than his "channellings"... It's all curiosity.

Anyway, if you have the quote where Master said that he wouldn't be "chanelled," I'd like to see it.

Re: RE: GIGO
Channeled masters were indeed present in Yogananda's work. He channelled from the holy mother. Read Ma Durga's book edited by Joan Wight again. He channeled regularly with the SRF women, with him as holy mother castigating them (in a high voice) for their transgressions for the day (usually not fulfilling their work quota) and him then asking the Holy Mother to forgive them (in a low voice). I heard him do this myself. I must tell you that I have never had any belief in the validity of channeling. Your beliefs may differ from mine.

RE: chanelling god
longago,

Thanks once again for you guidence and imput here. I think we can all agree that there's a BIG difference between an Enlightened Yogi chanelling God/Divine Mother and some everyday what's-his-name chanelling Yogananda (or anyone else for that matter).

Like you, I put VERY LITTLE credibility into these accounts of channelled masters. While some of these people may be simply charlatians trying to get money out of the gullible, I think probably some of them really believe what they're saying, and believe that the experience is a "master" speaking through them...

I don't know... I guess I can't ask them to PROVE that it is someone else, unless our chaneller can produce information about Master that only his family or a close disciple could know... I guess if he could go to Daya or Kriyananda or Mr. Davis and say "Remember that time when I told you...." and they say "I've never told anyone about that"... Then I might believe. In leu of this proof, I don't think I'd be able to believe the claims...

When the book comes (probably some time next week) I'll post some excerpts and my own editorial on it to let you all know what it was like.

I read through it at the bookstore...a waste of money in my opinion - but at least you will satisfy your curiousity.

Such experiences as claiming visions or channelling are beyond the range of scientific or intellectual evaluation. Those who deny them as impossible are as doctrinaire as those who accept them uncritically. Our opinions as to their reality in individual cases have to be based on critical judgement and inner feelings about those who claim the experiences. We are each on his or her own. I am mostly a skeptic, I believe I discern a lot of wishful thinking.

Re: RE: chanelling god
A) See book The Divine Romance, chapter "Where Are Our Departed Loved Ones?" for Master's discussion of channeling.

B) I am certain that somewhere else Master makes the flat statement that we should not believe anyone who claims they are channeling him, and that he would NEVER work through mediums. Too bad my memory is fading with age; I can't find the source for this quickly. Hasten the day we'll have a comprehensive, searchable CD-ROM or other media with all Master's writings, from original source material to find what he said.

Of course, what SRF publishes and attributes to Master can be so corrupted (e.g.; Whispers From Eternity 1959 edition) that I will never again trust SRF publications about what Master truly said and wrote. For me, doubt now will always cloud the veracity of everything the edit-crazy SRF publishes. We can't even trust photos SRF publishes. It's nuts. This whole SRF editing fiasco is the paramount thing, together with the adulation of Faye Wright, that has turned me around from 30+ years of dedicated support, service and contributions to SRF. SRF effectively says I can't read what Master wrote. I can only read what Laurie Pratt SAYS he wrote, and I think she's full of bunk.

Re: RE: chanelling god
Let us remember that Pratt was a professional astrologer and before joining Yogananda edited an astrology column in a magazine and gave readings to make a living. Even during her editorship for Yogananda, she went to Edgar Cayce for predictive readings. These were identified by a Walrus contributor, somewhere on Walrus, and are on the Cayce CD. Remember also that she wrote a long series of Astrology articles in East-West.

These interests undoubtedly shaded her editing for Yogananda substantially. But at least she listened to Yogananda, got his approval in his lifetime for her editing line by line (he micromanaged publications under his name), and had a clear mind about what she wanted to get across. One probably can identify and discount her astrological bias and any bias arising from her Mormon background.

I think one should not change personally approved writings posthumously. The later changes, unlike Laurie's changes, are not changes approved by Yogananda.

They often reveal a total deviation from, and lack of comprehension of, the Kriya-Vedanta tradition that Yogananda represented. These later editors appear to have uneducated, confused, jumbled, minds. Their changes obscure the writings. These editors lack the compassion and poetic instinct, even the maturity and judgement, required if one is trying (misguidedly) to accentuate the internal harmonies of the texts. They have tin ears.

Mangomoy,

Although I too have declining memory powers advancing in age, what you refer too I remember reading somewhere. And your comments regarding the state of SRF and their "editing" of PY's works is masterful. I find myself in the same position as you wondering just what the heck the guy said, and probably more important, what he intended to say!

I remember DM's views on channeling in one of the SRF Magazines in the 80's, I think. It coincided with the channeling craze which Master's Chela has re-hit upon in his quest for that particular book, you know, the whole Ramtha thing which was so popular.

Mangomoy,

Very interesting that Master said nobody would channel him. I had an SRF video where Dayamata (spelling?) was introduced as Yogananda'a CHANNEL.....

If you could dig through your mental file, I would LOVE to know where you read it!

SRFLONAGO: This is fascinating. Could you describe in greater detail the occasion, the people who were there, etc? I don't doubt what you said--just interested in "old times" and some first-hand accounts of Master.

These were occasional meetings attended by several of the women who lived time at Mt Washington, after the workday. There is not much more I can say.

Channeling God
From A PARAMHANSA TRILOGY OF DIVINE LOVE, by Sri Durga Mata:

"It was also in 1948, that we all experienced a very memorable incident. Master had an extremely deep ecstasy. One noon, around June 16th, I went to our small kitchen to eat, I sat down but I couldn't eat. I left the table and went directly to Master's room. He was sitting alone on the davenport and I sat near him, he said, 'Sit a little more distant away, Divine Mother doesn't want anyone to touch me.' He began to talk of his love for Divine Mother. One by one, each of the close disciples came. He told us later, that he did not want to call anyone, that She would have to call those She wanted Herself, and She did. After I, came Daya, Mataji, Sailasuta and Woody. He had us call the Lewis's to come too, it was the first time we had seen him in such a different ecstasy. He talked aloud to Divine Mother, and She would use his voice to answer him back aloud, so we could hear it all. Divine Mother took each one by our names and would tell us what each one's faults were, and Master's tender heart would come to our defense. Daya took some notes. Divine Mother laid us low and many others who were not present, according to each one's just deserve. I remember my scolding very well. I had to give up my room either at Mt. Washington or, in particular, at Encinitas for guests. A little while back, I was asked to give up my room at Mt. Washington for a guest again, and for the first time, I made a fuss about it. Divine Mother was taking me on the carpet for that, saying, 'Duj was selfish and wouldn't give her room up.' Master answered, 'Please Mother, don't punish her. She has always been unselfish and is my pal, and you know she takes on the sins of others, don't punish her, Mother.' Each one without exception got a lesson we never forgot. Can you imagine what this did to make us deeply remorseful. We cried so much and for so long that we were as listless as could be. After three days and nights of this crying and hearing all these conversations from Master to Divine Mother and vice versa, I had to go to Encinitas overnight. He continued his talking in the same manner while I was gone. Early that morning, Daya called me to say that I had better come immediately, they feared Master was going to leave the body. I drove so fast, I made it in a short time. I did not feel the driving at all. When I said to him, 'I am sorry, I was not here last night.' He looked at me and answered, 'You were here, I saw you.' One or more of us were in constant attendance, night and day."

Whether or not it was actually Divine Mother talking through Yogananda, he used this as a tool to make his disciples aware of faults that needed correcting, which maybe he didn't have the heart to bring up under normal circumstances. It seems to have served a good purpose. He was nothing if not resourceful! (I'm sorry to always be the skeptic but find it hard to take anything at face value anymore when it comes to SRF.)

Re: RE: chanelling god
I remember reading in the Bhagavad Gita (God Talks With Arjuna) advice not to listen to anyone who claims he/she acting as a "medium" to channel Yogananda. If I recall correctly, it was an SRF added footnote which said Yogananda had said this... that people are going to claim channeling, etc. don't listen to them. I don't have the Gita in front of me, but if you look in there you will find it. Maybe the index can help locate.

I never thought that Divine Mother was a specific person that could be channeled. Is Yogananda referrring to Kali as Divine Mother or who?

I think this is a somewhat different concept than what we're discussing here, and it is also one that other disciples of Master mention too... That of "being a channel" for Master/the Gurus/God. When Daya was introduced as Master's "channel," they were probably meaning in the sense of being a channel for his love, his essence, his message to the world (whether she is these things or not is between her and Master). This concept means getting your ego out of the way so you can recieve a clear "transmission" (intuition) from your Guru or from God, so that you can be sure you're playing the part that God wants you to play, and that God's message or his energies can flow through you untainted by your egoic desires.

"Channelling" Master is a completely different concept... Here, we're talking about Master (the PERSONALITY which he manifested in his last incarnation) kind-of "posessing" another person's body. As far as I can tell from what I've seen of other channellers, this doesn't nessesarily require the channeller to have any particular spiritual practice (many have a "I was just a regular person, then one day THERE HE WAS" type story) or be spiritually developed in any way. If one is being a channel for God/Master's energies/teachings, one is still themselves, but they're in tune with what God or Master wants from them. When one is "channelling" the individual sort of moves out of the way so another personality can take over their body.

Chris,
Tell me you're kidding about the prune story!

I read the other so called channeling of Divine Mother: chastising them so bad that they were crying for days, a mind screw beyond belief. But the prune story...., is this in the same book?

Forgive my stupidly, if it is a stupid question.
