Second Coming, be on your toes
I met a fellow devotee recently who said that SRF is concerned about persecution when they publish the Second Coming of Christ. This same fellow was very upset with SRF for changing Master's words in SRF publications. I'm not sure if this has or has not happened, but elsewhere in the Walrus is a disucussion about the Gita and whether SRF put words in Master's mouth when writing that book, and indeed that does appear to be fairly evident. especially if you go back into the old SRF magazines and read what the Guru actually did write about each Gita stanza---way short of what's in the published book. Anyway, here's my concern: if SRF were ever to try to try to save its image (if not its bacon), then the publication of the Second Coming (whenever it does appear) would seem to be the perfect opportunity to "massage" what Master said in order to make it palatable to a Christian public. Just a heads up in case you care about stuff like this----like the Gita, most of what Master said about the second coming can already be found in old magazines. Someone who has access to these old magazines really needs to make them publicly available---there's a link posted somewhere on the Walrus which contains a few of these old SRF mags, but most of the links on that site don't go anywhere. It would be a great service to humanity (no understatement) for someone who has these old mags to hook up with someone who has a nice website and post them all for the public good.

Re: Second Coming, be on your toes
For everyone's information, "The Second Coming" has been finished for several years. Why they are waiting to release it is anybody's guess, but you can bet that it has to do with an agenda of the bad ladies. Like many other so-called translations, you can bet that Mrinalini has interjected the party line (as usual) throughout. There will surely be a huge
explosion in the ranks of SRF followers when they finally figure out what has been going on with these "enlightened" writings.

Would someone please give me a brief summary of what Yogananda said about the 2nd coming?

bsjones,

I read the Second Coming of Christ as published by Amrita Foundation. I think the Second Coming, as I recall it, is just that Christ is within you, that is his second coming. The book basically goes over several chapters of the gospels and explains them in Hindu terms, and sometimes Yogananda says things in the book that may upset Christians. You can still probably get the 3 volume set through Amrita.

Re: Second Coming, be on your toes
Paramadas, you suggest that discussions on the Walrus suggest significant changes were made to the Gita publication. While such discussions did indeed take place (and I participated in them), I have yet to see anyone show a comparative analysis demonstrating these changes. I have a set of magazines going back to the mid-1930s, and I haven't been able to find evidence of really significant, major changes; nor is there any evidence of any additions, as far as I've been able to tell. I will say, though, that I didn't do an exhaustive comparison. I only looked at about three or four issues from each decade of the magazines from the 30s to the 60s.

There were indeed editorial changes, but these had to do with re-ordering paragraphs, tightening up syntax and improving grammar, and so on.

I'd welcome any evidence of any substantive changes.

Regarding the claim made by some in SRF that there will be persecution once the Bible commentaries are released, I remember a monk who served as one of Daya Mata's secretaries telling a few of us back in the 70s that she was saying this very thing.

But I don't think there will be any attempt to change any of Yogananda's writings regarding Christ and His message. First, too many of Yogananda's writings about Christ are already out there--in the books, magazine articles, service readings. Second, this would really necessitate re-working almost all of Yogananda's writings and teachings: his commentaries on Christ are an integral or at least inseparable part of his entire teaching and the principles underlying it.

As far as making it "palatable to the Christian public," well, that Christian community ranges from fundamentalists who would basically reject anything Yogananda had to say about Christ to those who would embrace that same message.

I will not be surprised to see plenty of added editorial comment, though, in the Second Coming. Given all that has happened in the world since Yogananda's time (for example, the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls), I wouldn't be surprised to see plenty of footnotes and commentary on a number of issues relating to the life of Christ, His disciples, His teachings, and, perhaps what might be rather interesting to us all, the role of the Church vis-a-vis the teachings and the followers.

Chuckle Chela,
Well, this is good news indeed. I haven't read the Second Coming articles from the magazines in many years, but when reading the Gita, I got the distinct impression that it was much more "polished" than the original. If I'm wrong, I'd be surprised but delighted.
By the way, do you happen to have the December 1935 issue of East West? That's the ONLY issue that is absent from the collection at the Library of Congress, and I'd love to know what's in it.
