God is Divine Mother
GOD IS DIVINE MOTHER: A New Teaching Brought to the West by Yogananda?

We have a prophet in our midst, a lady who lives in seclusion in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. She has no use for New Age writers and what they don't know, and if you read her later books, entering samadhi is no problem for her. Through her writings we have seen her transition from a wife and mother with paranormal abilities to a wise and aging "crone," the final stage in a woman's life. Mary Summer Rain is the lady's name. (For those interested, SPIRIT SONG is Book One, the foundation of all the others. Her Guru was No-Eyes, a Master.)

We have also seen the gentle transition in Mary's writings to the clear-as-a-bell statement that when the Divine first manifested, the energy was feminine. Mary now frequently merges with "Mother Sophia" as is evident in the first volume of her final book, PINECONES AND WOODSMOKE. Samadhi it is, as anyone who has read Yogananda's poem can recognize.

This brought to mind the painting in GOD TALKS WITH ARJUNA (page 894) where Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are shown emerging from Cosmic Nature, Mother Prakriti. "Cosmic Nature, Mother of all vibrations, has three phases: the creative, preservative, and dissolving states, governed respectively by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva..."

We know that for Yogananda God was the Divine Mother. He didn't write hymns to "Heavenly Father." And as someone wrote on this board somehwere, "Ramakrishna said nobody escapes from this world without Divine Mother's permission. Witness when Totapuri tried to drown himself in the Ganges. Even though he was enlightened already, he couldn't do it, because Divine Mother didn't allow him to."

It seems to me that SRF isn't doing its job of one fantastic revelation that Yogananda lived: The head God is feminine--Love, Mother Prakriti. Did not the great saints of India swoon over Divine Mother? Where then is the Heavenly Father? In Christian church dogma, that's where. Though Divine Mother receives attention, too frequently in SRF writings God is referred to as "He." Yet, for Yogananda, God was always the Divine Mother. For, as he said, "The Mother is closer than the father."

Not only closer, but higher too! We all might get a lot further in our meditation if we pictured God as a loving Divine Mother rather than a judgmental father, courtesy of our Jewish/Christian background. It seems that the "should" tone of the SRF writings totally reflects the western idea of the father-god, and Daya Mata's Morman background is the most extreme expression of western style Christianity--though she speaks freuqentlly of Divine Mother.

India has no Heavenly Father comparable to Divine Mother. Maybe SRF should (!) get the ball of revelation rolling: The head God is Love and Compassion, Mother Prakriti (or Mother Sophia). I am wondering (from srflongago and others) if in Yogananda's time there was more emphasis on Divine Mother and a more relaxed approach to spirituality??

female aspect of god
Some Hindus worship a personal god that is represented by a male form for example rama, krishna, shiva.

Others are called saktas. These are worshippers of Devi or Sakti, the female aspects of God. In Bengal, the state Yogananda was from, Kali (or Durga) is often worshipped. Kali emerged from Durga's forehead in a battle which is told about in the Candi (pronounced Chandee)

Krishna, Shiva
Yes, I know there is the personal worship of male Gods in India, mostly Krishna and Shiva. But that's not the same as one overall Mother Prakriti or Divine Mother from whom all the other deities come. (According to the Gita)

More than subjective....
The idea of the personal god-image (Ishwara) is to charge us, to manifest in us, that which each one needs in their state of developed consiousness. So yes, God is the Feminine, God is the Masculine, God is both and God is All-in-all, and much greater than even our present perception! Omnipresent, Omnipotent, Omniscient!

Brahman is Supreme Spirit
Acutally I way I understand the Hindu cosmology, Brahman is the Supreme Spirit. Everything originates from within Him. But, of course, He is beyond all name and form, thought, utterance, etc. etc. So it isn't correct to call Him, Him.

The Godhead is Spirit, formless, neverending, constantly expanding Brahman. However he manifested Shakti, or Prakriti to make, keep together, and dissolve the universes. So that is why the "Mother is closer," I think. She is OM, immanent and ever-near.

Happy 50th Anniversary of Master's Final Samadhi to All His Disciples!!!

Jai Guru
