Reply 		Evolution of monastic order and vows
Greetings all,

Some questions for those who have been on the inside (or who know SRF history). The current monastic order is: applicant, postulant, novice, bramacari/bramacarini, sanyasi.

Questions:
What was the monastic structure in PY's time?
When did it evolve to the current structure?
What are its strengths and weaknesses?
What are the nature of the vows at each level?

I know there's no applicant vow, so these questions are for postulant and up. I'm particularly interested in the sanyasi vows, and would love to hear from anyone who has actually heard those vows given. Some have said that it's no big deal if folks leave the order up through the bramacari/carini level because the vows are not for a lifetime--only for as long as they are in the ashram. But its a much bigger deal for sanyasis to leave.

As far as I know, there are only two sets of vows an SRF householder kriyaban can take: wedding vows, and the kriya pledge, and I know what those are. ;-)

Well, I know it's bad netiquette to reply to my own posting, but...

Is there anyone left on this board who was in the monastic order?? I was hoping to get a serious discussion going of the pros and cons of how monasticism works inside SRF, but there seems to be no one left who can discuss it from experience.
