Master's Second Mistake
Master made a mistake. He ignored the warnings of an engineer and built his dream temple on the unstable cliffside of Encinitas. The end result of that action was a disaster. Why Master would erect such a gorgeous structure on certain terms that it would be destroyed is a mystery. Yet, in his native optimism, he did conclude that he could salvage its remnants and use them as the "cornerstones" of newer temples.

Masters do not operate on the same set of premises that we do. They can make the same mistakes as us -- even worse ones -- but their actions are timed to serve an ultimate purpose which is sometimes set far in the future.

Before Master's mahasamadhi, he stated his intention to have monastics running the organization. His direct disciples have carried out his directive faithfully -- SRF is now an organization run by monastics and for monastics. The lay disciples are an afterthought, a convenient source of cheap labor, and a deep pocket for their financial appeals.

The SRF of the "Modern Streamlined Yogi;" the SRF which keeps actively abreast with the best of science and culture; the SRF which stands on the vanguard of spirituality, shining as a beacon of renewal for religions lost at sea, fractured by the clashing waves of petty divisiveness and waterlogged by dogma and churchianity; the SRF which models patterns of integrity for a jaded world; the SRF capable of bestowing the Cosmic Mother's milk of kindness and compassion on a thirsty humanity; the SRF so attuned to the rhythm and will of God that there is no reason to rely on secrecy and lies to accomplish its mission -- such an SRF does not exist!

That rarest original seed which our guru carried from on high was to be proliferated in the minds and hearts of an expectant world. But it has been paved over, cemented over, and on that cold foundation an artificial shrine unworthy of his lustre has been erected.

Couldn't Master forsee this degradation? Or was he aware that this would be another one of his "mistakes" with a surprise ending?

It is a new century and we have a promising future before us. As our Master said, "The world is marching on." But is SRF keeping pace? Or is it straggling behind, caught up in its own energies and opinions about itself? There are a few here and there -- soon becoming a multitude -- who can no longer sacrifice their consciences in an effort to maintain the facade worn by the leaders and supporters of this troubled organization.

It is as if we are once again standing on the water's edge at Encinitas. But this time, The Golden Lotus Temple is not what's falling. That was only a prelude of things to come. This time the impending calamity is far more tremendous in scope and the stakes are higher.

When the Golden Lotus Temple began to slip, there was nothing anybody could do but stand and watch. Broken shards of glass and sundry decorative pieces were found strewn up and down the beach. It was one of Master's shattered dreams. And yet, the pieces of that original dream somehow became spores in a fertile wave of temple building. So all was not lost.

Has it occurred to you that history is repeating itself? Once again the "engineer" speaks, and this time it is the Matas who aren't listening. Was this Master's second mistake -- to appoint people of faulty vision at the helm of such an important work? Forgiveness does not cancel the pull of gravity. We can try to understand, and for various reasons, make every attempt to be loyal, but, in the end, none of that will stop the slipping once its begun.

Brothers and Sisters. It has begun. Against such monstrous weight, there is nothing one can do but stand and watch. When the haze clears, you must take from the wreck what you can and build anew.

In the future, there will be an orthodox church of yoga for the masses -- a place of simplified spirituality which provides a safe and sanitized version of truth. This will be our Matas' legacy to posterity. And running parallel to it will be numerous groups which come to preserve and vitalize what is now the most colorful but neglected hope of our guru ---- that there one day be a future world civilization resiliently reflective of God's creativite urge and freedom --- a world without boundaries, a world boundlessly benevolent.

Re: World Brotherhood Communities
Wow!

That was great dear Nataraja. Your name sounds Indian, but your English sounds heavenly. Beautiful, poetic, thrilling. However, I suspect that your prediction will be only partially true. Many groups will and are being born -- I agree -- even as I write this. However the remaining sanitized SRF you are talking about, is an impossibility! SRF will never be able to survive at all, unless, THE TEACHINGS are sanitized! I mean, made... -- Should Free

Different Strokes
I believe this question/response is worth reprinting on this thread....

The words in the quote box belong to Been There. My response follows....

But do you not think that, like the Catholic church, SRF fulfills what many members need? Those who want it will find security in SRF. The ritual will be there, the ochre outifts will be there, the prescribed behaviour will be there, the fool-proof explanations of the purpose of their suffering will be there.

I agree here. 40-45% of the world's population are what Keirsey calls "Security Seeking" Guardians.* Since they are the largest group, it makes sense that a large worldwide religious movement should cater to their type. Ritual, rank, hierarchical organization, neatly packaged cosmologies are all part of the Guardian aesthetic. The message of Jesus was coopted by the Guardians in the form of the Catholic Church. But that doesn't mean that other expressions of his message aren't valid.

*(The other types are in the minority: Artisans 30-35%, Idealists 8-10%, and Rationals 5-7%)

You cannot rescue someone from something that gives them comfort. Even the most corrupt leadership of SRF is preferable to them than a world without it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Again, since Guardians are Stability and Security Seeking, they thrive when set in clearly delineated organizational patterns. Since they are ruled under a different ishta (deva) than the other types, they know how to handle corruption of a Guardian nature. Such corruption follows very identifiable patterns. On the other hand, what is threatening to them is exposure to other patterns not in conformity with their natures.

Quoting Kiersey:
"Change for a Guardian is unsettling" Guardians are the " keepers of tradition, of custom, of continuity with the past.....the new, the improvised, and the innovative, seem almost an affront to time-honored traditions, and are certainly unsettling."

Maybe the leadership is right -- the "housecleaning" has been good. What is left in the monastic community and in the lay community are the individuals who are happy (or resigned) to buy or to "serve" the reality of what SRF has become.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well from their perspective they are right. The Guardian system has to be quite airtight in order to work. Keirsey calls them the "gatekeepers"...

"Guardians naturally assume the role of society's gate-keeper, standing guard at the door and keeping a watchful eye on the coming and going of the people under their jurisdiction. Those without proper credentials (outsiders) cannot be allowed through, those who ignore boundaries (trespassers) must be caught and reprimanded, and those who think they have the right just to barge in (gate-crashers) need to be stopped and expelled --- 'shown the door' as [they] tend to say."

You cannot awaken anyone who is happy to be asleep
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Or are they asleep? Assuming they are living out a different life pattern than ours, they may be fully awake to theirs but asleep to ours. And visa versa. The main reason why Isabel Meyers and David Keirsey got into this research was to foster understanding and communication among the diverse people in the world. The title of Keirsey's book explains it all: "Please Understand Me." Most often, people, drunk with their own energies, do not want to understand others of a different nature. They want to get people to conform to their vision of the world --- this form of coercion among the types is what is known as a Pygmalion Project. To be quite honest, I'm puzzled by how we all expect to become one with God -- who is the synthesis and transcendence of all types -- if we still insist only living in miscomprehension of each other. To me, that's the ultimate slumber.

Another way of seeing it

My opinion is they will survive...and very healthily. The question I think we all must ask is "How do we survive?"

I believe that Ananda is truly being faithful to one of Master's many rays, but it isn't for all. I believe each person needs to run to their guiding star and set up shop. Without a doubt, we are all linked by the kriya tradition, but we are not the same.

Rig. The language in the teachings is perfect for the Guardians. It's just not right for us "NF" Idealists. Why don't we do a rewrite project and see what we come up with? It would be a fun way to dive into our guru's thoughts, making them relevant to ourselves. And, if we come up with something undeniably resonant, we can share it with others.

I want to explain something about Guardian language. According to Keirsey, each temperament has a preferred language style. Guardians use the imperative style. So that's a big clue. That's why they don't mind "Shoulding" and other types of bossy thinking. In fact, it's such a natural form of communication for them that it seems invisible.

Keirsey explains that Guardians are perpetually interested in "rule making" and "enforcing." They seek out the "responsibility of command" which implies that there must be many who will seek out the responsibility of obedience. Thus, imperatives are the binding glue of such a social contract.

Conversely, the "Idealist thought and speech tends to be interpretive..." and best suited of all the types for reading between the lines. The bossy, imperative communication style of the Guardians is actually an impediment to an Idealist's thought process. For a Guardian, reading between the lines -- especially when the words come from a respected authority figure -- is equal to an act of insubordination. "Ours is not to reason why; ours is but to do or die."

But to an idealist, such mental engagement is considered a gesture of respect. Whoever said "One the virtues of a true disciple is intelligent questioning of the guru and his teachings" must have been an Idealist.
