How did it begin?
From Answer to Job by Carl Jung, p. 71:
Quote:
Although the Paraclete [Holy Ghost] is of the greatest significance metaphysically, it was, from the point of view of the organization of the Church, most undesirable, because, as is authoritatively stated in scripture, the Holy Ghost is not subject to any control. In the interests of continuity and the Church the uniqueness of the incarnation and of Christ’s work of redemption has to be strongly emphasized, and for the same reason the continuing indwelling of the Holy Ghost is discouraged and ignored as much as possible. No further individualistic digressions can be tolerated. Anyone who is inclined by the Holy Ghost towards dissident opinions necessarily becomes a heretic, whose persecution and elimination take a turn very much to Satan’s liking. On the other hand one must realize that if everybody had tried to thrust the intuitions of his own private Holy Ghost upon others for the improvement of the universal doctrine, Christianity would rapidly have perished in a Babylonian confusion of tongues—a fate that lay threateningly close for many centuries.
I think this is the clearest possible description of what has occurred within SRF. Starting with the proper desire to prevent dilution and corruption of the Kriya teachings, the leadership has gone way, way overboard and is repeating all the mistakes of the Christian church. At least they had the excuse of living during the downward trend of the lowest Kali Yuga. For the “religion of the New Age,” this is unpardonable behavior.

Re: How did it begin?
Too true Vulcan. This quote from Jung describes the situation that SRF, as a religion and as a would-be authority can only fear and try to squash. In this respect they can only work against Yogananda, a true free thinker and doer.

SRF as the Apostate of its own Creed
Many of us believe that if Paramahansa Yogananda were to return today and ask for admittance to the SRF monastic order, not as himself, but as a man of realization, they would not let him in. Such a being is the last thing they want. It would overturn everything they have done for the last 50 years.

The question, of course, is if Master would want in. I don't believe he would. He never intended for things to turn out the way they have: a hard core monastic order, bad ladies in charge, people being psychologically abused by the twisting of his very own words and teachings.

The bad ladies ARE making the same mistakes that the Catholic Church has made. This is the way it is with "organized" religion in the lower ages. Read Thomas Merton's Contemplation in a World of Action. In it he describes what was going on in the Trappist monastery he was in, but it is an exact description of the very things that are going on deep inside the SRF organization.

They would not let Master in?
Tusker,
Could you explain what about Master they would not want in the organization now? I am trying to follow all this.

That is quite a thing to say!

They Would Not Let Master In
A true being of realization, dynamic, independent, creative, full of initiative, full of the essence of Life itself is the most threatening thing to them. Such a one would automatically oppose -- with his mere presence manifesting the power of his inner freedom -- the web of fear, deceit, and control they have created and live in. It would scare them to death. Fear triggers their need for control and they would deny him.

This is not unique. It has happened again and again throughout history.

How it began and is playing out
Hubby and I were talking this one over yesterday and he pointed out that, just like what happended to the Catholic Church, the history of SRF's actions since Master's passing virtually guaranteed that there would eventually be a "Protestant" rebellion. We are witnessing it now in various forms. Meanwhile, SRF leaders appear to me to be trying to maintain a tight control over everything. I can only see that this will have limited success. (I've been reading Matthew Fox's book Confessions about his split with the Catholic Church (he was a Dominican monk and theologian). The parallels are quite startling.

I think it was Survivor and KS discussing the future of SRF in another thread. Survivor made the point that SRF would carry on, appealing to a more limited audience. I think this is right. I don't think SRF is doomed, but it will only appeal to those who want a more (forgive me for the use of this word, but it is descriptive) fundamentalist approach to Master's teachings. To my mind this is quite unfortunate, but there it is.

I would like to see a shift in SRF partially because I'm still somewhat attached to it and the people who make it up, and partially because I think SRF in its present form is more than just a little dangerous. (I do agree with those, however, who maintain that one should be able to let the organization go entirely).

Tusker used the beautifully apt phrase, "SRF the Apostate of its own Creed." One could also use Jesus' image of not putting new wine into old vessels, which is, I think, what we're referring to.
