purchase of Lake Shrine
The is from a 1989 SRF prepared 12 page (8 1/2 by 11) The Lake Shrine, which was given out to the public when they were trying to get the new temple approved.
on page 4
" How the Mc Elroys' ten-acre park became the Self-Realization Fellowship Lake Shrine is a remarkable story. In the late 1940s Mr and Mrs McElroy sold the property to an oil-company president who moved into the windmill and planned to construct a multi-million dollar resort hotel complex around the lake. Before he could proceed, however, the new owner of the property had a strange experience.

One night the oil company executive awake around three am after a vivid dream in which he saw his new property as a "Church of All Religions". He had dreamed that a large group of people was assembled by the lake, and ministers gave inspiring sermons from a podium. He fell asleep again, but again the curious vision awakened him. After this had happened three times, he got out of bed and looked up "Church oa All Religions" in the telephone book. The only such listing was for the Self-Realization Fellowship Church of All Religions in Hollywood.

Deeply moved by his unusual experience, he immediately began to write a letter describing his vision and offering to see the property to Self Realization Fellowship. His wife woke up, and learning what he was doing, exclaimed. "You're going to sell our home at three o'clock in the morning?" Unperturbed, he finished the letter and mailed it to Paramahansa Yogananda, founder of Self-Realization Fellowship"

Later on page 6

"When the McElroy estate in Pacific Palisades was offered to him in 1949, Yogananda immediately recognized it as an ideal place for the open air shrine of all religions that he wished to establish in Los Angeles. Several benefactors of his work generously provided funds for the purchase of the property."

Aumboy,

I now live in the North Hollywood area and was curious about this as well. After considerable sleuthing, I have not found it mentioned in any of my various directories.

I was hoping to visit that, as well as the Lake Shrine, but am having little luck locating their exact locations. I will surf the web a little, hoping to find an ocean of spirit residing in the shape of a Lake.

If I find the address, I shall come back to share. :)

Take care---JadeDragon

Jade Dragon,

If you need directions to the Lake Shrine, and if I understand your statement that you're trying to find directions I can help.

From North Hollywood take the 405 S to Sunset Blvd. Go West on Sunset for about 10 miles. After you come down the hill toward the ocean at PCH in Pacific Palisades you'll see the Lake Shrine on the Left.

Another route is to take the 10 Fwy South to the end in Santa Monica where it merges and becomes PCH heading North. Stay on PCH to Sunset Blvd. Turn right on Sunset and the Lake Shrine is on the right about 1/2 mile up from the intersection. Just turn into the parking lot and enjoy the beauty and peace of the grounds.

The Hollywood Temple is at Sunset Blvd and Edgemont just east of Vermont. Across the street from the Kaiser Permanente Hospital.

Bless You Both!
I managed to locate the Lake Shrine today using the tried and true method of gas station inquiry! I saw an article about it in a newspaper clipping at the SRF website, and followed my nose. I was greeted by a sign that said "Closed Mondays" but I was glad to put my feet on grounds that I knew were special. Even if only to peer across the fence in awe.

I will be back there tomorrow to wander through it's shaded avenues, and I thank you much, both Lobo and anon for your speedy assistance.

What a nice couple of fellows. ;)

And the directions to the Church in Hollywood was a stroke of clairvoyance that was met with much appreciation as well.

Take care---JadeDragon
