My First All-Day Meditation
Greetings Walruskuteers!

Today (12/21/2002) I had my first all-day meditation! What an experience, and not at all like what I was expecting it to be.

Being as how my longest meditation previous to this was about 2 hours, I should have expected what came to pass sitting in one place for eight hours. I must say that it was one of the most physically and mentally taxing experiences of my life. For the first half of the day, I was struggling with not falling asleep, and the second half with my aching knees and back, although I had a brief period of a few hours after the 1/2 way break that were quite deep. I had a distict expereince of hearing the 2nd chakra, which came to me as Krishna's flute sound. I've heard this once before, but there was a slightly different melody this time, though in the same key and with the same notes. I also had some powerful insights on ideas that I've been working on for a book about the conflict between science and relgion and the history of science beginning with the Alchemists.

At the end, I thought that I'd pretty much blown it, as I felt like I'd just been restless and achy for the most part. Then I saw a friend, an older man who has become something of a surrogate grandfather to me since moving here. He smiled at me, a smile that came from DEEP within, and hugged me. In that hug, I felt, I KNEW that we were THE SAME. That we were standing in the same peace and love and joy. On my way home, I was at a stoplight near the American River (in Sacramento where I live) and saw some big black buzzards circling over the river. They seemed to be dancing with the wind currents, and each time they shifted direction and flew a bit higher, it was as if the flock all intuitively knew what to do and immediately a new bird too the lead. They all moved as one. It was beautiful. I watched it for a good two minutes, capitvated. Just the light turned, another flock came up and joined the other, seamlessly coming together as one. It was breathtaking.

After this I was reminded of a talk I had with a very developed guy I know who told me once that he never understood why Buzzards and other scavengers are so reviled in our culture, when in Tibet they're considered messengers of the Buddhas and the nature spirits (they have "sky burials" for the dead where they take the bodies up to the plateaus and leave them for the vultures... See the Movie Kundunfor an example of this) These animals, I realized today, are a PERFECT example of non-violence and harmony with the natural way. They unlike almost all other beings (including us vegetarians) NEVER take life in order to be sustained. They simply fly overhead, patiently waiting for the owner of a body to vacate, and then they take what they need.

I was once again reminded today that it's not the "experiences" one has in meditation that are important, but how the practice changes your perceptions of the world, how it makes you see the good, see God in all things here in the material world. Samadhi will come for us all at some point. Till then, we must appreciate the small beauties of this world, like a scavenger, dancing with the wind.

All joys to fellow devotees and truth seekers on this Blessed season.

Jonathan
