Mother Meera
I saw Meera in Germany. What a disaster. I was fascinated by Andrew Harvey's book and thought that she could help me. So I made the detour on my way back from a guided North Indian tour, and reached the little village just before the program, jet lagged, hungry, and wickedly depressed. I hadn't found enlightenment in India, and something was telling me I wasn't going to find it here. With nothing to eat and only good German pubs on every corner, I hoisted a few with predictable results. I was not to be deterred. I would be fortified for the evening. Lining up outside her house I had no choice but to pee in the bushes, as we had been expressly requested not to do. Or did I have a choice? It seems to me that I did. Why was I so intent on sabotage? I found a place at the front of the room and sat down in lotus position. Meera's attendant politely asked if I would be able to stay for the length of the program so as not to disturb others by leaving. I assured her that I could. Samadhi gives you that power. In walks this tiny Hindu girl, looking neither right nor left, and sits down on her chair. The first devotee kneels before her and she stares intently into his eyes, rocking back and forth, and then lowering her eyes to signal the end of the darshan. The same process is repeated for each person. I am very far indeed from experiencing anything like samadhi. I am wondering why I am there at all. But I have a very clear recollection of the look I was given by Meera's attendant as I stumbled my way out of the room. I would have to find enlightenment elsewhere.
