eating meat
In the lessons it's mentioned we can eat little or no meat. How much is little? I guess this is directed to those
who eat meat.

Re: eating meat
The interpretation that I've heard the SRF monks give over the years is that PY taught that people should be vegetarians in their diet, but if they felt that, for whatever reason, they couldn't they then should give-up pork and beef, eating fish and chicken instead.

There are various reasons, as I understand it, to become a vegetarian such as the impurity that meat inherently possesses, how it affects one's practice of kriya, and the fear impressions left in the bloodstream of the poor animals that've been slaughtered to get their meat.

Sri Yukteswarji speaks to this issue, eloquently, in his Holy Science, for example, going into the differences in anatomy between animals that are carnivores and herbivores/fruitanians.

Re: eating meat
As Lobo said, there are impurities in meat such as steroids. There are also stress related chemicals the dead animal produced such as adrenaline and who knows what as yet unidentified hormones. Also, from a metaphysical standpoint, the body (of any creature) contains in its molecular structure the totality of its character, its personality, its impulses, its samskaras, its instincts, etc. This includes, for instance, its mating lust. The theory is that to therefore eat the flesh of an animal is to ingest all of its attributes, favorable and ill. Remember, in some primitive cultures, if one ate the heart of a great predator, for example, one would gain its strength or whatever attribute. This reaction to eating certain foods is valid. I knew a man who would start a fight if he drank whiskey, but was a @#%$ cat if he drank beer. Similarly, I know a man who becomes, shall we say, romantically inclined when drinking wine but not so with other alcoholic beverages. I am a vegetarian but will occasionally eat some fish or chicken. As absurd as it sounds, I discovered that my teeth hurt when brushed if I eat too much meat. When I quit, the pain does as well. This is not psychological but a true reaction to eating meat. The point is, as one becomes more spiritually advanced, he is granted awareness of the more subtle vibrations around and in us. Thus, to eat meat with it’s subtle negative vibrations is to retard or dampen ones awareness of the subtle realms. This, of course, is precisely what a yogi disciplines himself to avoid.

Re: eating meat
Thank you for the reply. I understand the yogic viewpoint on avoiding meat. But where should I get proteins from? I'm not the one to make all that effort to prepare combinations of vegetarian food to get proteins. There's so much controversy on diet that it's hard to know. Since starting veg. diet, about 1 & half years, I noticed getting thinner most noticeably in the face with black eye circles. So I worried I wasn't getting enough nutrition and I recently started eating fish. But I did a blood test and it was normal.

Re: eating meat
Djali123, yes, protein is important. More important still is the type of protein. For instance, you could eat a diet of protein from say chicken feathers, but you would also die. I will share with you, therefore, since you ask. I do not know how old you are, but as we age our HGH (human growth hormone) declines. It is HGH which is responsible for stimulating many if not all of the other hormone producing organs. HGH, by the way, is produced by the pituitary gland. When HGH is sufficiently present in the body, aging is retarded, cells more readily reproduce, build, replenish and maintain themselves. When one's hormone levels are up, the soup that runs this body is in balance. As the chinese think, life is harmony. The question is, how does one stimulate the pituitary gland into producing as it did when in its youth. The answer is branch-chained amino acids. This amino acid formulation is fortunately found in many brand names in large health food stores, such as GNC, General Nutrition Center. You can also order off the internet. Be aware that these manufactures charge as much as possible without being thrown into jail, so compare price to quantity. Also, for effectiveness, buy branched-chain aminos. I use Amino Fuel, a black label, yellow lettering label on a white plastic bottle. It costs $25.00 for a month, as opposed to as much as $90.00 for a month. I also do not use as much as they reccommend and seem to get along fine.

Now, about the protein issue. While you are at the health food store, look at soy or whey based protein powders. Whey is supposedly a better source of protein than soy. Again, compare price. And if all you are interested in is suplementing your protein intake, then don't buy powders designed to gain weight because they are high in fructose. You want protein. The point is, if you give yourself the amino acids and the necessary protein, your body will do the rest and you will naturally gain weight if that is what you want. Otherwish, you could just pig out on potato chips and accomplish the same goal for a lot less money. Hope this is food of a different type. Love, of course. Sos.

Re: eating meat
I have been following a raw food diet and do not have a protein deficiency, in fact I am healthier than I have been in years. There is a very good article on protein at living-foods.com/articles/proteincontroversy.html
The only thing a pure vegan diet may be difficient in is vitamin b-12, which can be taken as a supplement or gotten from spirulina or other non-animal sources. Although many yogi's allow dairy in the vegetarian diet, modern dairy farming practices in America are probably different than those practiced a generation ago in India, and I think we should call that into question as well for the same reason of the vibrations and history of the food we eat. I prefer fruit among all foods as it is the most non-violent. Not even the plant is injured as it offeres it's fruit up freely to us.

Re: eating meat
Even though the original post is dated, this is excellent information.

First, we have to go back to Sri Yukteshwar who advises, in so many words, find a diet that works for you and stay with that diet.

For many decades to get my protiens, I have eaten as a main staple my own version of an Indian food called Kichuri which is a combination of rice and mung beans. I was told by Indian devotees that this Kichuri was a yogi food. The dish is easy to prepare and keeps well over the short term. Of course, I also add to my diet fruits, vegetables and nuts among other foods advised in the lessons. After some years later, I discovered a book, Diet for a Small Planet, explaining that a combination of rice and beans yields a complete protein. Published in the 70's, the book has been rewritten for the new millenium.

As an aside, Yogacharya J O Black, one of Master's direct disciples, ate Turkey dinners every Sunday. Mr Black also ate fried chicken and fish on ocassion and when visiting his grandchildren, who didn't share his passion for yoga, Yogiji would even spring for a lobster dinner.

Speaking to the "vibration" diet school, Yogi recommended lamb as a `safe' meat because, he said, the lamb goes trustingly to the slaughter and meets death without fear vibrations. Of course, one can see a strong reference to Christianity here.

True to yoga's teaching of evenmindedness in all things, Yogacharya Black, did not support fanaticism in diet. He took great Joy and a bit of fun in pointing out the "surprised" reaction of devotees who were of a sterner demeanor.
